Annoyed by job interview that wasn't.

    On Monday I received a call from my supply agency, it wasn't from my usual branch but another local branch. The consultant wanted to send my CV to a school that were recruiting. I said yes and less than an hour later I got a call back from the same person to tell me that the school were very interested and wanted me to come in for an interview on Wednesday (today), I agreed (I was happy that I was shortlisted so quickly) and further details were sent on to me later that day.
    I spent Tuesday planning a lesson and researching the school, making sure I was prepped to deal with any questions that might come up and that all my resources were ready. I received a phone call from the agency who gave me feedback they had received about other candidates, giving me tips for my interview. I went to bed happy knowing that I had done all that I could.

    Today I received a call at 8.30am from my usual consultant informing me that the school had decided to appoint someone from yesterday's interviewees. I'm very disappointed, not because I didn't get the job but because I wasn't able to show my ability at the interview. It feels like I was dismissed without a chance. I understand that they found someone who suited them but if they liked me enough to shortlist me surely it wouldnt have done much harm to let me interview?

    Am I being too precious about this?

    Here is a (former) head's perspective. The job was almost certainly advertised (at great expense) via the TES, etc and people interested in the job wrote lengthy applications and were shortlisted. What often happens is that an agency asks if they can submit candidates and the head agrees - sometimes simply to get the agent off the phone and off her back.

    The school has already set out its timescale and recruitment process and it may t be the case that the agency was simply allowed to put you forward in case a candidate could bot be selected on the interview day (which was yesterday).

    Your best chance of getting a job is to monitor the TES and apply f o r posts advertised - mostly because heads don't WANT to recruit via agencies, because it costs a lot in fees if they do.

    MM's interpretation of this is the same as mine.

    And I will repeat what she says: if a school had two applicants pretty much even-stevens, but one comes via an agency and will therfore cost them a couple of thousand pounds in finder's fees (yes, that much), you can guess which one of the two they will choose.

    Being presented by an agency puts you at a disadvantage.

    Thankyou for your replies.

    I tend to apply for jobs directly myself and use the agency for supply although they have been very good at getting me some long term supply roles.
    From the feedback I have received the person that was selected had also been sent by the agency. I was just upset because I had gone to the effort of creating an interesting lesson and making sure that I was prepared and then not having the opportunity to showcase myself. I know that even if I had had the interview that didn't mean they were going to choose me, I just felt a little deflated that I wasn't able to show what I had done.

    However I won't dwell, this job wasn't for me but something will come through for me!

    That lesson may come in useful some other time, so don't dwell too much on it. Always good to have a quality lesson to fall back on!

    Of the half a dozen jobs agencies have approached me to interview for recently, not one of them was advertised on the TES nor on the schools website. Clearly, in some cases, schools use agencies to do the vetting and admin for them so they can just interview the 'cream of the crop'.

    Did those interviews actually happen @splinters ?

    I am very surprised that schools, who have great budget problems, are paying someone to do something that they could do for free themselves.

    i.e. short list.

    They have no way at all of knowing that the candidates presented by an agency are either the cream of the crop or on the contrary the unemployable dregs. Unless they see other candidates,. how can they?

    It surprises me as well, Theo, but I do remember in summer 2011 when I was job hunting (and at middle management level) having two interviews 'arranged' via a supply agency - I can't fathom why, personally, but they do.

    That doesn't make any sense at all. Each school still has to "vet" its candidates (it is an obligation) and as a head I wouldn't imagine for a second that merely taking agency nominated candidates would get me the "cream of the crop" - how could it? Heads are always keen to recruit experienced teachers and these are far more likely to be already employed and apply independently.

    If a school doesn't advertise and approaches agencies, it's because they're in a tearing hurry - probably from a sudden resignation.

    1. They probably had been advertised, previously, and to no avail. The only schools that go straight to an agency are the ones that have little hope of recruiting in a competitive market (because they have earned a certain reputation, or have fallen foul of Ofsted).
    2. The likelihood of the average agency rep knowing one end of a teacher from the other, let alone being able to identify the 'cream of the crop', is remote. Most of them are just sales sharks whose last direct experience of the classroom was when they left school at the age of 16.

    I got two (albeit temporary) jobs in the same year via agencies so interviews do sometimes happen. One of them led to a permanent job somewhere else so it's not all doom and gloom.

    I also attended a school for an interview where I know they were interviewing large batches of people over several days (for one position !)

    You're right about the finders fees though and often it's much more than £2000

    Sorry, missed these replies.
    Firstly, the role I am just finishing was set up by two agencies on the same day (very embarassing as they argued over who should net the reward) i had a 15 min interview where I was told that two specialists had dropped out and, if I had not come along, they would have to take on the most competent 'non specialist' supply teacher they could get in the role for a whole term.
    As for the interviews @TheoGriff they never happened as I declined due to the distance but at least one has now been advertised on the schools website (yup, a school that requires improvement) and for another they are STILL arrranging interviews for the third week for a two term part time role.
    So, they are either getting poor teachers, no one wants a longer term post or the school is so bad that no one wants the role....however, the school still interviewing is rated the same as my current school which isnt bad at all.
