Ancient Greek Maths for Year 6

Discussion in 'Primary' started by matt_moo, Jun 10, 2011.

  1. Hi, folks!
I'm doing a topic on the Ancient Greeks with my Year 6 class this term, and so far they are loving it! However, I'm keen to keep Maths and Literacy based around the topic as much as possible, as I think that will engage the children more. Literacy lends itself really well and I've probably got too much that I want to teach before the end of term, but I'm finding it a little more tricky when thinking about ideas for Maths activities with an Ancient Greek theme.
I'm doing some work on Pythagoras, and we'll do some more algebra - which my class absolutely love! - but if anybody else has any ideas, I'd love to hear them. I'd like to make it more open-ended and investigative and I've got some extremely able mathematicians, so if it's a bit more challenging, it really doesn't matter!
    Thanks all!

  2. Our Y6s love using the golden ratio to discover who has the face of a Greek god or goddess. I begin with using photographs of famous celebrities (full face), e.g. Beckham or Cheryl Cole before moving on to recording their own measurements. Don't forget a prize for the boy and girl who come closest to the ideal of classical beauty.

  3. I'm doing the Ancient Greeks with my class this term too and found this amazing book in my cupboard. If you can get hold of a copy you might find it useful too: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Maths-History-Greeks-Mary-Brading/dp/1862151512/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1307795250&sr=8-8

  4. Thanks to you both for your responses! I'll definitely be investigating these options further to see what I can find...

Try this link to outstanding lessons wiki- I have used the Greek City States lesson structure and ideas but with a different theme and worked really well.
