    When greeted by another
supply teacher in a school which is ever more rarefied nowadays . It
isnt long before the words 'are you getting enough work?' are
uttered. If you haven't met them before in my experience you get this
situation where they usually bluff and pretend that everything is
fine. Well that’s how it used be now I hardly see anyone. Just
wondered. I know this will only be a snapshot of those willing to say
so but how much work have you had this term

    Me: so far
    (Secondary)

    9 days teaching

3 ½ days as cover as
a supervisor - pointless really I know! I feel dirty now but it was the
start of the year and to say I was desperate would be understatement.
Even worse I was a total mug for trying to deliver actual lessons - I had
access to lesson plans via the schools network. Looking at the
payslips boy do I wish I hadn’t bothered.

6 full days and 4 half days, secondary maths and also in Lancashire.Things seem to be slowing down for me rather than starting to pick up.

  6. I did three weeks as a teaching assistant before the half term (sacrilege I am aware but bills needed to be paid) and had 7 days supply before the half term. Since the half term I have had 14 days since the half term. I'm in London and signed up with a good few agencies. I think I am going to jump from the supply ship before the school year is out and in about Feb/March look for non-teaching jobs.

  7. Haven't had any work for over a year. North East Kent.

  8. Secondary, Design Technology specialist but will teach ANYTHING!!
Before I got lucky with a 3 and a half week stretch which has one week left, but possibility for extension
    5 full days
    2 half days
    1 half day CS
    South Wales
I'm feeling very lucky, but still not the full time position i'm in desperate need of

  9. Since I started in April - Summer term 5 days, Autumns First half term 1.5 days. Currently since half term I am doing 5 half days per week at the school I did 1 day before half term as they needed PPA cover. I am very lucky. I am only in 2 afternoons next week and 1.5 days the last week as they wont have me in when its all just Xmas parties!! North East.

  10. Since October half term I have had 9 full days. All prebooked (apart from a morning phone call this morning). West Wales

  11. ....JUST NOT ENOUGH!!!!
....a few odd days of CS
....only recently got a short/medium term booking for 3 days a week, but that me having to jump the biggest hoops imaginable....what is the point!!!!

Down here in the Rural South, nothing since last July, apart from one phone call when I had a funeral to go to!

Its not been too bad for me, I have had 28 days since the start of October, I wasn't avaliable before then.
But only 5 of these have been through an agency the rest were as a result of direct contact with a school. I'm with two agencies one of which hasn't contacted me at all since the start of term. The other has been pretty good and has offered more then the 5 days already mentioned but unfortuantly when I was already booked.
I've noticed an increase in agency work recently but finding working directly for a school with agencies filling in any gaps the way to go at the moment.
My calender tells me there is another possible 11 working days before the Christmas hols so I hope to get a few more before then.

Before half term - nothing except 2 days booked direct through a school. Was waiting on an agency CRB which arrived during half term.
Since half term - first week nothing, second week 1 day, third week nothing, last week 2 full days and 2 halves, this week 3.5 days, would have been 4.5 without strike. Have 2 days booked for each of the next 2 weeks already. It's really starting to pick up now for me. I have to say the majority of the work I've had has been booked direct through schools however.
Agencies are REALLY annoying me. One called early one morning to ask if I could work in a children's centre with toddlers. I said no, I'm a teacher and have NO IDEA what to do with toddlers. Do they still wear nappies? And how do I change one? (I'd have been useless.) They then called back to offer me nursery, I was like, "No, I just told you I don't do below Year 1." They did then call back with a morning in Year 1.
The other know I have a job in January. I've told them twice. Since telling them, I've recieved emails offering me a full time, permanent caretaker position, and 2 temporary teaching assistant jobs. One of which was in a secondary school. One of them was addressed to me personally "Dear modgepodge, sorry to keep emailing you with news of jobs but these have just come in." W.T.F.?!

In East Lancashire, West Yorkshire and Manchester, I have had just 2 days since September, i nearly had a third day, but it was cancelled as I was due to set off. Otherwise it as been dire.

  16. Working backwards - 0, 4, 22, 126 and 170+ plus days per year and this after 30 + years teaching.

  17. i am not doing too badly, at least 3 days a week and sometimes 5. I already have 3 days booked for next week.

  18. As I've said before, this has been my worst Autumn term since ill-health pushed me into supply work 6 years ago. In 2010 by this time I had had 30 days (Sep-Nov) This year 've had 7.6 days and 4 of those through a school I have direct contact with. Nothing at all in October!
I'm signing on for contribution based JSA - £65.00/week for which I have to drive 2.5 miles to the town centre Job Centre at 4.00pm on a Friday when the traffic is horrendous and pay £1 for parking. That means I spend c!% of my salary just signing on. Plus I have to fill in the pointless job seeker "diary" of what I have done to find work and then be shown the screenfuls of non-existent jobs put on by various agencies.
In 2 week's time, joy of joys I have a special interview to help me with my job seeking skills. Probably some pimply youth that I taught to read and write a few years back. I will again have to explain why no one is likely to employ a top-of-scale teacher, even with 30 years experience, when there are so many NQTs looking for jobs. Ironically I'll not get any JSA that week either as my pay will have come through from November's supply work.
I was hoping that supply would hold up until I reached retirement age in a couple of years time.

    West Midlands, secondary.
Seven days since half way through Sept when CRB came through. School where I have done 5 days have offered me a short term contract from January until April/May on 4 days per week.
Agency very supportive. [IMG] Paying me at a slightly higher rate as the school is further away than I wanted to travel. It all helps!!

  20. I wonder with which agency you are registered, Franklin?. I am now with four agencies, plus one placement agency. Since March this year, I have had a couple of hours as a CS; that is it. I am secondary science in NW London.
