Alternatives to cancelling the Olympics

This morning I read an article that discussed the possibility of cancelling the Games due to the virus in Japan. One option was to host the games in London., but this was discounted due to the logistics. I assume the availability of the accommodation in an Olympic village and the availability of venues is what would create the problem.

Hopefully it does not come to this, but my proposal would be to divide up the sports and ask 33 (the number of sports) countries to volunteers to host a single sport each.

Surely this would be easier than looking for a single alternative?

Better to postpone the games for 12 months & keep them in Japan?

Would they sell enough tickets? A fortnight to one place is way cheaper than 33 flights, and more eco-friendly.

This sounds like a workable alternative. However, if it is considered such a risk to host the games in the chosen city of Tokyo, would it not be considered a threat to host the Games in some, many or all of the alternative cities?

Would this not be a better model for every Olympics? It would share the financial responsibilies and profits. It would bring the opportunity for counties previously with zero option of hosting an Olympics. It would allow a country with a local expertise to specialise - eg Bulgaria could host weight lifting. It would provide and oportunity for world wide cohesion and unity.

Athletes and officials would only travel to one destination the participate in their chosen sport. Spectators would simply go to the prefered sport. I am not sure but it could result in less travel?

Paris 2024 may be a test for this when we see how many spectators travel to Tahiti for the surfing.

Brilliant. Bring coronovirus to London and ensure it spreads. That's all we need. The most sensible thing is for everyone to forget about the Olympics until it's safe.

If they knew what would happen with Spanish flu back then, they'd have stopped the war until it was safe to massacre each other again.

Can't it all be done using an "app" now? :D

There seems to be apps for everything else that happens.

Why not just postpone the Olympics for 6 months or whatever.

Alternative Japanese cities wouldn’t have the stadium and facilities required.

If it's not safe to host the Olympics in Japan because of the virus, then the principle of not flying people and athletes all over the world applies equally to any potential alternative.

Better to postpone it for 12 months and then hold the next Olympics in 2024 as planned.

The way the virus is spreading it may be a world wide problem by then. Perhaps we'll just have to accept it like we do with flu, it doesn't actually seem to be much more serious for the great majority of people.

Olympics in 2021 would clash with World athletics and World aquatic championships and probably others, so not really feasible
