  3. Hello - my class loved the Africa topic! My main text was The Hunter ( but can't remember the authors name). It is excellent for art - recreated the lovely postcards of African women dressed in colourful clothes. We also experimented with batik, marbling and screen printing. Geography (ofcourse):), comparing localities/schools/lifestyles/landscape, music, food, animals, water (filtering of water)... you will think of lots of things and you will really enjoy the topic! good luck!

  4. Anyone else please?

  5. Cross curricular - PE african body percussion! My year 5s have loved it, even the boys!!

  8. MrsRay and FunChick you have mail with planning and photos

  9. Thanks for the email psycho_jo. Did you have published resources to use to support your teaching of Africa, or was it stuff you got off the web?

  10. Mainly stuff I found out myself from internet and books. Was also lucky that a friend of a friend took loads of pics of a township so I could show kids that.

I did use the Africa lives on the BBC story pack, a published book on Nelson Mandela's story (aimed at kids) for lesson on him.

Also got some artefacts from library plus a ton of books but that's it.

  11. You start a thread on the Teaching Overseas forum.
There are many teacher who contribute who are working in Africa. You may even be able to link up with a school in Africa.

We did Africa as part of our whole school topic last year. I set up a partnership with a school in Nigeria through the 'Global Gateway,' a website specialising in setting up partner schools in other countries.
It's dead easy to use. All you have to do is enter a brief description of your school and the type of school you are looking for. We've recieved loads of great photos and stuff from our Nigerian school.

  13. Brilliant psycho_jo - many thanks for your efforts and time!

  14. Where are you, funchick 2?If you are within 100 miles of Yorkshire you could book me to come and do some African drum workshops with your pupils:

I teach African drumming and can provide one-off workshops or longer courses for schools (and other groups).

I work with any/all ages from 8 up. My workshops are especially good as a way to deliver the National Curriculum for music at Key Stages 2 and 3, but everyone, up to and including adults, can enjoy and benefit from this activity. No previous experience is necessary. It's good for relieving stress (staff sessions available!)and also great for team-building.

I bring my own djembe drums and djundjuns and can provide enough for 26 participants at a time.

I'm based in Yorkshire and can travel anywhere within a 100 mile radius.

Very affordable. Please e-mail for info or to get a quote.

  15. Hi, sorry to hiijack the thread here, but I'm teaching using an over-arching theme of 'Kenya' in year 4, on my final placement (I'm a student teacher).

I love the idea of linking up with a school in Kenya, I will have to have a word about this with my CT.

Sorry to jump on the bandwagon but psycho_jo, would you mind emailing me a copy of your documents please?

    Many thanks in advance!!
