advice please for a year 8 and parent.

  1. I have just been to my year 8's parent evening and she is apparently doing well, her English levels is a 4b and she is making progress.But the school completed a reading test with her and she scored a reading age of 8 to 8.3. According to her tutor this is fine, but should I be asking for more work with her at school. She is a reluctant reader but will read at home, her spelling age was also 3 years behind. Should I accept that the school thinks that this is ok and that she has group reading and silent reading sessions. Or should I be asking for more help and if so what help?

    If it was me, I would ask for more help, as I personally think reading is so critical - not just for English. Of course, I don't know anything about your daughter - so it could be that anything more than a 4b is not realistic for her at the moment. I have a reluctant reader myself - but she has just discovered the David Walliams books - and is hooked! She is actually ASKING me to listen to her read! Sometimes it case just be a case of finding the books that grab them - ask the school for some suggestions. You could also try non-fiction - could she find these more interesting (especially if they relate to a hobby or interest she has). Bear in mind that the reading tests measure comprehension, rather than the ability to pronounce words - have the school give you some ideas of the sort of questions you could ask her about her book in order to practice this? If not, I can send you a link. Another idea I find works for some kids, is to make reading fun - using silly voices for different characters for example (won't work for all kids). Good luck x

    What level did she leave primary school with in Year 6?- has progress been good since then (4b in Year 8 would indicate she left with a 3c/ 3b?)
    If your funds run to it I would personally be tempted to get her a bit of tuition at home for that extra 1:1 time. (This may be more necessary when she starts GCSE) Are the books she is reading at home challenging enough - maybe ask what books school can supply or advise?
  4. I would want to know what her target level is as well as her actual level, and also look at the progress she has made since end of Y6, it might be that she is underachieving or it might be that she is simply doing her best at a slightly lower than average level.
    In my school, we do offer some interventions for our level 4 students but only if they are two or more sub levels from their target levels. Unfortunately we have quite a large number of L4 students in Y8 and tend to work mainly with those who are below target. Most of our other L4's will be taught in a small supported class anyway (by me!!) so do get specialist teaching.
    With a reading age of 8 to 8.3, she would definitely be receiving some 1:1 reading intervention to work on accuracy and comprehension. But the best thing you can do to help with reading is to encourage her to read aloud to you for at least 10 minutes every night and make sure you ask her lots of questions about the book - some open ended and prediction ones as well as simple factual ones.
    As her spelling is also below average I would be asking for a simple non-verbal reasoning test or possibly a LASS/LUCID screening if the school use that software as she might have some weaknesses on specific areas of literacy such as memory or reasoning which might indicate some level of dyslexia, especially if your daughter is bright and articulate.
    But really, the children who make the most progress for me are those whose parents do a lot of work with them at home to complement the work done in school. You will get loads of ideas what to do on the internet.
