advice on interview scenario

  1. Just looking at possible questions / scenario's for an interview. Could you please advise on how you would deal with the following scenario?

    A boy in your year does not get on with the other pupils in his year. He is large for his age and as a way of trying to make friends, he pushes and shoves other pupils, leading to fights and disruption. He get into trouble but his parents believe him when he says that other pupils are ‘being nasty’ and that this is the cause of the trouble. How would you address this?

  2. This is surprisingly common, if that's any comfort. The boy concerned is basically anti-social or has some problem that needs addressing - if his parents support him unquestioningly that probably points to him being indulged to some extent. This is not a simple issue, though it seems so from the outside. Assuming that the parents are not going to find any comfort in being told the truth, follow the school's code of conduct to the letter. Those affected should be reporting the issue themselves as the school has a duty of care towards them. It is best to have a process whereby written statements are available, backing your claims and reports up. Heresay simply will not be acceptable as this can be challenged. Once you are certain of the facts and can back them up, implement sanctions as outlined in the school's code of conduct. Advise the parents of the reports and the subsequent sanctions as you do not need their permission to police your own campus - they should know the rules. If the behaviour continues, the sanctions escalate. As a part of the process, the boy should be made to attend sessions with your school counsellor, if you have one. Ultimately, the culprit will either reform or will move on. Essentially, make sure of your facts and act according to the code of conduct. Hope this assists you.
