Probably a bit obvious but Robert Westall The Machine Gunners - Blitz - Blitzcat - Fathom Five

  3. A bit late now, but we've just used 'The Best Christmas Present in the World' by Michael Morpurgo about life in the trenches on Xmas Day and the one day truce between the 2 sides.

For Year 3 I'd suggest "the Lion and the Unicorn" by Shirley Hughes, it's a picture book, but the text is high quality, it's about a boy who gets evacuated to a large country house.
  5. Like Lardylegs suggested Lion and Unicorn is excellent picture book and we also read Friend or Foe by Michael Morpurgo - did World War 2 with our year 3's last term and they absolutely loved both these books!
