'activity week' activities!

  1. Hi Everybody
    I must admit that I don't actually post on here much - bit of a lurker more than anything but I was wondering if anybody had any good ideas for activities for 'activity week'. We only actually need to have one days worth of activities as it will be taught via a carousel system.
    The activities need to be for Year 7, 8 or 9 and that's about all of the info that we've been given so far, any other suggestions would be much appreciated!

  4. Fellow lurker and colleague of above - French and German is what we teach, but any ideas for introducing 'taster' sessions in other languages as an option?? I like the cookery idea! Will investigate if it's logistically possible.
  5. had thought about that but the first problem is that the DT dept might be using the food tech rooms at the same time that we have been scheduled to do the activities. The 2nd thing is that we're supposed to be doing the activities for 100+ kids at the same time which means that we wouldn't have enough food tech rooms anyway.
    The taster sessions might be good but given that we only had a turnout of 1 person for Spanish club yesterday (there are 1250 students in the lower school) this might not be well received and we also might not have enough people with knowledge of another language to teach the session...

    Do you have access to computers? If so, could they find an authentic German/French/Spanish recipe & work out how what it means? Or instructions how to having access to dictionaries. I've done this with making wooden spoon puppets & they then make the puppets.

    I would really endorse the computers suggestion. We have activity week with classes of year 7,8 and 9 mixed together as well. How about research a foreign town/place and make a powerpoint about it with prizes to the best ones.
    Last year we didn't have access to computers and I spent AGES compiling an activity pack to try to cater for quiet girls in year 7 AND raucous boys in year 9, etc- I had quizzes in there gleaned from EDL websites, boardgames I have made, boardgame templates, instructions (from mflsunderland site) and lists of vocab for them to make up, and a few other things like make, 'Where is Spot?' books with pop -up labels and it went ok, but it's a pain because you have to have a three year cycle of activity packs, or they've already done it all. Also it still felt a bit like crowd control. This year we just showed them Ratatouille and I'm almost ashamed to say it went down a treat. We found a worksheet on here to accompany it but didn't need it. Nest year we will be showing them 'Gnomio and Juliette' in French. I DID actually order a couple of DVDs of world cinema and European cinema short films, thinking that would really interest them, cover the age groups and actually interest them in foreign films, but the films aren't suitable/interesting to a teenage mind (I thought so and I tried some out on a class of year 8 and they agreed), as the clips were too odd, being made by budding filmmakers to showcase their zany, original ideas. So! Computers or film- that 's what I say. :0)

    Try teacheractivities.co.uk - it has a compendium of over 200 lesson activities that can be tweaked for any lesson. Hope this helps.
  9. I have found that a boules/petanque tournament goes down well on a summer afternoon. A request to colleagues supplied more than enough sets of boules. You can score in French and have French related prizes and or certificates.

    I always lured students into the languages club at lunchtimes through food, especially the boys !!!.We did lots of songs in other languages eg Abba in Spanish or silly songs from Youtube, Alain Le Lait`s are very good , being easy to learn with great, funny videos.

    We did food tasting , with pupils with another language , who would do a mini language taster, even some staff would do a stint if they had a language to pass on and we would offer a typical dish to try to match the language. They would do a bit of a culture topic as well, be it a Powerpoint on the country , or realia, photos etc.Lots of multi cultural and linguistic value here .We only had time ( 25 minutes ) to learn basic greetings ,try them out and learn one topic like numbers 1- 10 /colours/, food names but enough to make them want to explore further.Used the IWB a lot, led by pupils .

    We used the ICT suite on occasion for them to create their own mini website on a language, or a display for the corridor on what had caught their interest, that term`s worth of languages club.

    Sports are good as well as games. We did a boules tournament , as a league, in one term . Board games in the foreign language work well , as does a game like KLOO. You can teach them basic phrases like `your turn, move forward, go back.miss a go` and they can make their own games of Snakes and Ladders on one language theme, with a picture to be named in the language, to be be able to go up the snake etc.

    If you can persuade the DT dept. to help supervise a cookery demonstration/ making a dish following instructions , with you, the children get a lot out of it. You can do it in a MFL, or as a cultural event. Pupils can invite teachers to come and taste their offering and it draws in the rest of the school. We also invited in guest speakers , as in parents willing to share their linguistic ability or a student from a language college , eg we had a Japanese student do a language taster for us.Ended up with a full day off timetable doing Japanese and the culture, with other teachers helping out. We offered the pupils a carousel of ;karaoke session, fan making, origami, sushi tasting, Noh mask making, language session , link to a Japanese school in the IT suite and a martial arts session provided by a school looking for new martial arts pupils, who did it for free.

    I did a 'collapsed timetable day' activity on 'invent your own language' which went really well. I nicked the idea from my placement school. PM me if you would like more details !

    Why not do something on languages in general -

    The origins of words?

    Give learners the same word in various languages and ask them to work out the word and/or languages.

    Categorise words into language groups?
