Activity ideas for a visiting Year 5 class?

Discussion in 'Design and technology' started by misfit, Jun 24, 2011.

1. We have a year 5 class coming in for an 'experience day' the week after next and our department have been asked to run a session with them lasting a for a double lesson (1hr and 40 minutes). We will be splitting them into two groups of 16. Any ideas for a FPT or other activity that they would enjoy and has a real WOW factor? There's a bit of competition going on about this between departments. Money shouldn't be too much of an issue as long as it's not extortionate. I'm thinking of doing something around batch production and a production line. Preferably nothing to do with any form of keytag - that's been so done to death over the last few years! Any ideas??

2. How about something along the lines of the mini-light/torch that Rapid do? I've done this with cubs (8-10 year olds) and they loved it!

3. I have just done Baked Alaska with a year 6 class. We did that as a sort of assesmbly line.
1 table made the whisked sponge
1 table prepared tubes of icecream
1 table prepared the fruit
1 table prepared the meringue
1 table for assembly
Cook for 5-8 minutes
Serve and eat YUM!
Kids could not believe we could cook meringue with icecream and it stay cold. It was a wow lesson!
