Your view & you are entitled to it. We were asked for a quote that has got us through & this is mine. One week I like art, another writing etc. Maybe I should have put "Don't take life so seriously"??

Sorry. I've clearly spent too many years watching kids with minimal life chances being told exactly that and then wondering why it didn't come true for them.

Perhaps you ought to have intervened and told them what they were in for.
I am reminded of a parent many years ago, whose child was definitely destined for the clerical grade of the Civil Service [with a following wind at that] who asked me what was the best way of ensuring that her son got to Oxford or Cambridge.
"Oxford via Birmingham, Cambridge via Kings Cross works for me." Once she'd stopped lapping the ceiling we had a useful talk.

It was not encouraged at that kind of school. I remember trying to motivate a sluggish bunch of GCSE students with a faux-rant. Do you think this level of weary sporadic low-level effort is going to get you a GCSE? You are up against every other 16 yr old in the country - including the ones at private schools, the ones with tutors, the ones whose parents have computers (it was a long time ago), and you think they're all putting this amount of work and effort in? You need to be running to stand still!

Courtesy of "The Murder Game" on TV and often quoted by a wise colleague in the last hellish school I taught in.

Also one of my personal ones, "I can & I will watch me." A bit of a finger up to my biological Father & Ex husband (I quickly add, not the same person ha ha) :p:D
