  1. No most LAs are advising schools and teachers not to do this, nor put it into child speak either; argument being you will then change the criteria for which the APP is supposedly famous for ie being a nationally standardised piece of **** that only increases teachers workload; doesn't tell us anything we don't already know and isn't statutory to actually implement. good luck.

QCA have categorically stated that it must never be translated for the reasons given by the previous poster.
Our Lit advisor has slightly found a way around this by writing a child speak version as I can statements.
I daren't pass it on as he's already a bit nervous that he'll be found out!
We use it just to help us understand some of the gobbledygook but ultimately we have to stick with the original APP if we are going to bother using it.
Would rather stick it in the recycling bin personally.

  3. As assessment co-ordinator I am leading the phasing in of APP and a group of us are currently trialling it - you are right it is a lot of work!! I've too been told not to change the statements and I am loasthed to sit and type out a whole new set of sheets etc as I can see it being a waste of time. I have made a simple leaflet for teachers which I used at an inset. I am happy to share if anyone is interested??

  10. I have to say that I haven't heard that message about APP...focus education have some very good materials for reading, writing (coming soon or may be just out) and Maths (I think) that are both split into sub levels - which is no doubt a big no no - and written in child frindly speak right from L1. It's not cheap but my school are certainly getting the reading one.

Would be delighted if you would share. I too have begun implementing APP, but it's proving to be hard going. It requires that teachers have enough understanding of the AFs to be able to give a detailed analysis of each pupil's capabilities in every key strand in Maths and English. Weren't the APPs were originally written for KS3 teachers, i.e. subject specialists? Yet we are being asked to apply that level of understanding in two, possibly three, subjects. I truly despair sometimes!

  12. Me too please!

  13. As mentioned before, Focus Education have good resources but they've been introduced to us not as the APP assessment criteria translated but as relevant and related target statements.
Unfortunately I lost my copy but got such a good idea of where the children were at and where they needed to go next that I simply made up my own.
It's not as hard nor as time consuming as you might think
Personally I quite like APP - it's long overdue that we are trusted to make judgements based on the children's work and not just giving a score based on a test.

  14. I agree Mrs. Peel!

We are currently embedding APP for writing and introducing it for Maths - once the initial assessment has been carried out on the children, it is not as time consuming - plus writing targets are very easy to set from it and it takes into account all the written work that takes place across the curriculum - giving teachers back their professional judgement!

BTW, I would be very grateful for a copy of the leaflet given to teachers!
