A Level Textiles

Discussion in 'Design and technology' started by nicola_wall, Aug 25, 2011.

  1. Hello;

    I currently teach A Level product design and my school have just added A Level product design (Textiles). I am trying to write a SOW, I have used the spec off AQA for the theory part but I was wondering if anyone could give me any advice as to what projects you do for AS?

    Thanks for your help!

  3. Good luck to you with this! You may wish to join Textiles Surgery on Facebook which I set up especially for A'level Textiles teachers.

    Anyway - not to put you off, i do the full project at AS and A2 and in my experience of talking to others and attending AQA meetings students who do full projects have tended to get higher grades I think though other teachers may disagree. 95% of my students get A grades on coursework with many achieving full marks. Thank goodness because they seem to get really low marks on the theory exam but then that is a countrywide result. (average of 70% getting D's E's and U's countrywide) hope that doesn't put you off. Mine have a free choice of what to make but then they do at GCSE as well - I like the variety so anything from wedding dresses and Bridesmaids dresses to work wear suits or costumes at A'level. we have a wide variety!
    message me if you want more help.

  4. Thanks, I'll definitely be joining your group! Luckily I'm only teaching the product design 3D and we have a specialised textiles teacher doing the practical bit. However, I may be messaging you if I do get stuck!

  5. That's good.. practical is not a problem. It's the theory we all find so hard to deliver and get good grades in. If you have a secret solution please let me know.

  6. Hi,

    I have also just started to teach AQA A Level textiles, it's my NQT year but I've had experience of teaching GCSE and I also have a degree in a related subject.

    I'm a little confused about the coursework, do the AS/A level students choose their own topic for the coursework, or do AQA provide a list of briefs (like GCSE)? Also, when do you start the pupils off on their coursework, I was thinking about starting it in the next couple of weeks.

    Any help would be really appreciated!

    Thanks! (I've also joined the FB group)
