I just read 'the psychopath test' by Jon Ronson... rung so true...

I remember when my HT told me I was going on capability, he seemed genuinely confused about my reaction. Why was I being all emotional? Why was I angry? It confused him. He just couldn't see how it was a bad thing.

I have worked under three College Principals, the first was an 'old school' gentleman, the second was a megalomaniac with narcissistic traits, the last (prior to my retirement) was a fence straddler and a downright liar at times.
So a psychopath? Why not it completes the mix.

    Some signs they missed...

When they sharpen knives in department meetings...

When they keep measuring and weighing you saying 'mmm Christmas soon'

When they lean over and say 'you get a puppy for Christmas that you don't want anymore?'

Fortunately in our organisation, the psychopath is me. :D

Yep. My last headteacher seemed to have all those traits!

Erm, I don't think those are really indicators of being a psychopath. You will know one when you see them, unless you are one yourself.

rac will say people should take it before they get married.

Might save a lot of problems later on.

The basic definition of a psychopath is a total disregard for anyone else's feelings. This can be low key, or very highly volatile, the latter indicating criminal tenancies. A bit like Head Teachers really.

May I just put in a plea for people to recognise that there are many Heads and other members of SLT who are hard-working, professional and extremely caring about their pupils, their colleagues, and the wider school community?

It is somewhat depressing at times to come on to TES and be faced with what seems like blanket condemnation of one's self and one's valued colleagues.

    Best wishes

Don't take it personally Theo... I'm sure many SLT are as you describe... and threads like this just let those of us twisted by bitterness to let off some steam.

I know from experience you are definitely one of the decent ones!

I'm happy to put on record that of the 8 headteachers I spent any substantial time working for, only one's deranged management style drove me to resignation. The rest were civilised in varying degrees, and a couple of them were a pleasure to work for, including (fortunately) the last one.

The deranged one was very odd though.
