  1. A long piece of cardboard, divided into units of five and then stretched flat again. Get the student to count up in units of five until they reach fifteen. They can then cut off the strip. Once this has been done three times, lay the strips one on top of the other. This is a first step for visual learners- and it is even more effective when working on fractions.
