2nd in dept. interview

Discussion in 'Jobseekers' started by phoebe84, Feb 1, 2011.

  1. Dear Theo,
Having always found a range of solid interview advice on here in the past, I thought I'd come back for a little more (especially as I have a very short time to prepare)!
I'm over the moon to have been offered an interview for a Second in department post, particularly as I finished my NQT year last April. I do think I'm very capable of the job as I have a lot of experience behind me which is very relevant to the post, however, I'm keenly aware that I'm likely to be up against more experienced candidates. Any and all advice on how to get this job on the day would be gratefully received. As much as I don't want to get my hopes up as I know I'm punching above my station, I desperately want this job in this school!
    Many thanks in advance.

Excellent! You must be very pleased indeed!
If they have shortlisted you, it's because they think that you can do the job. Great going!
The best advice is in the two Interview clickables inside the Welcome thread - shows you how to prepare intelligently. Off you go!
Looking forward to that new thread called Dear Theo - I got that job!

Look carefully at the job specs & think how you'd address the management issues, all the usual stuff about current trends, new initiatives etc.
Best of luck! Let us know how you get on.

  4. Thanks for the helpful advice. We've just had Ofsted in my current school and I don't feel like I'm going to be bringing my A game, but hopefully all will end well! What do you think might be a key new initiative for dept. leaders and 2ic? I'm thinking all of the changes to the 14-19 agenda could be a big topic, especially as the school has not had sixth form provision running for that long.

Also remember it's 2nd in dept, so possibly think about how you'd cope with pushing through a senior colleagues suggestion, which you weren'tcompletely happy about.

Agree if it was for head of Dept, but possibly how you could contribute to new moves in this area?

  7. Thanks for the focus, Lara. I've got a few good examples of pushing decisions I'm not happy with from my current role in mind for Friday now. I'm guessing tact, diplomacy and professionalism may be some key words there within an interview context (as much as I can think of other choice words within my current school)?!

Google "education white paper summary". The changes in funding for school sixth forms could impact on your department if the school decides to close down subjects with few students.
    Best of luck!
