2010 World Cup Resources

Discussion in 'Primary' started by littlemissdaydream, Mar 19, 2010.

1. Evening everyone! Whilst watching Sport Relief I'm feeling inspired to start my planning for next term. The KS2 topic is the World Cup and after trawling the net there doesn't seem to be many resources out there as yet. If you have found anything or made a resource based on the World Cup I'd love to hear about it. I'm sure there are plenty of us preparing to teach through this topic so lets try and pool together what we've got! xxx

2. I have some world cup resources including spelling games, wordsearches, geography and numeracy resources etc.
Site not quite finished as I am still updating some resources from last world cup.
http://www.northwood.org.uk/world%20cup.htm
Hopefully other schools will find these useful.

3. There were a lot around for last world cup - google/search on here and tweak?
Sadly the old stuff I had met an untimely demise when I moved house and had yet another of my brutal clearouts. May be worth looking at the olympic stuff from the other year as well - lots of that could be tweaked.
Could easily do investigations into symmetry using flags of the participating countries,
Use stadium capacities for rounding/large number investigations
Obviously Geog links with different countries
Probability? England winning etc (yes I know it's generally slim-to-none!)

Will post some more general ideas if I manage to think of them (at 6am on a Saturday brain is not in gear).

Perhaps we ought to make this one of those threads where we collect initial ideas, like those dizziblonde has put forward, and then collate them into something that can be uploaded to resources - a collection of the wisdom of TES Primary on the topic.
My initial thoughts are:
English
-Lots of opportunities for advertising-linked work like campaigns to encourage tourists to visit South Africa
-Writing a rap to support England (I won't be doing that)
-Writing a recount of a match (might be quite good for some of the football fans)
Maths
-Scales on maps, looking at which teams are travelling furthest, etc.
-Plenty of geometry in football pitches, comparing areas and perimeters of largest and smallest acceptable pitch sizes, or those in the competition
-Problem solving ideas based on tournaments
-http://nrich.maths.org/1184
Geography
-Lots of obvoius map work about identifying particpant countries and comparing. Might be interesting to group them, e.g. by continent, by population, by wealth, etc.
-Scale - compare size of SA to UK, and look at distances between main cities, etc.
-Lots of scope for a comparison between the different areas of SA, comparing rich & poor, cities and townships, etc.
-A study of climate comparisons, perhaps using graphs and charts to compare aspects of climate in the UK & SA
History
-Scope for a comparison between 1966 UK and 2010, e.g. availability of TV, transport, etc.
-Focus on SA during British Empire period (links nicely with projects on Victorians)

5. Thanks everyone. We have some really good ides here. Im really looking forward to teaching this topic now. Anyone got anything else to add?

6. I remember Mr G's great resources from 2006 so looking forward to seeing updated stuff.
As well as the usual geography and history of the world cup, newspaper report/commentary approach etc This time with the 'new' topic themed working I'll include African Music, Art and patterns, masks etc. Designing kits, boots, mascots, logos and looking at food

8. Found this great Literacy resource for the World Cup- written by the National Literacy trust. Some great ideas- but I especially love the free story that will be published each day which will link to the events of the world cup as it progresses.

Hi,
i see that you have masses of resources already, but wondered if you knew about the joint fundraising scheme we are doing with Self Help Africa, called, 'Score a goal against hunger'.
There are resources and activities, inlcuding a guide on how to make African plastic bag footballs.
Here's the link:
http://www.selfhelpafrica.org/selfhelp/Main/worldcup.htm

13. Have a look at communication4all.

14. I have been focussing attention on increasing achievement in literacy (particularly boys) and havee just discovered www.myworldcupyear.com - where you can create/tailor make your own or class World Cup 2010 book. For around £20 you can sign up and immediately start creating a class treasure. The online book will have match reports, stats, photos etc for every match played during the World Cup. These can simply be dragged and dropped or dragged and edited completely and named as individual/pair/group work. You can also upload your own photos. I'm planning on getting every child in my class to draw a countryf from a hat and then work with a partner (opposing country) to produce match reports - certainly for the first round. After the World Cup we will be sent a hard back version of the book to treasure for ever. Sounds great.
