What about "Poppa's Blues" from Starlight Express - which goes through the AAB structure in its lyrics...

I've used Hound Dog and verses from Flip Flop and Fly and Sweet Home Chicago before.

The trick (I've found) with doing singing in class if you're feeling a little unconfident is to make sure you really know your words, and just go for it - plenty of gusto and totally over the top...

    Good Luck!

  3. I always used to make them up,
I woke up this morning with a pain in my head
I woke up this morning with a pain in my head
So I took an aspirin and went back to bed.
It isn't beyond year 8 to do the same, follow the "I woke up" formula and the rhyming words.

You could use this one for listening:
    My Time is Expensive
Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown performs his song.
Blues Master Class: Loyola University, New Orleans.

  5. I also made up one when i taught it:

Not done my home work, Im gonna get 'done'
Not done my home work, Im gonna get 'done'
    i haven't done it, got a detention.

Admittedly and argument over whether detnetion and done rhymed generally followed!

But anyway...i'd then get them to write further verses to fit the melody on the theme of 'school day blues'.
